5 Movies to Watch This Christmas Season

By Marina Krivonossova on November 11, 2020

With COVID-19 showing no signs of disappearing this holiday season, we have to find ways to get in the Christmas spirit from the comfort of our own homes. However, with all the amazing Christmas movies out, this will hardly be a challenge. Of course, there’s some classics you’ll probably want to rewatch — like Elf (2003), the Home Alone films (1990-1997), The Santa Clause movie series (1994-2006), It’s A Wonderful Life (1946), and so many others that many of us grew up with. However, I want to share with you 4 of my favorite Christmas movies that a lot of people (as I’ve noticed from chatting with my friends) have never watched or even heard of — along with 1 secret bonus film to end the list! So, grab your cozy blanket, make some kettle corn, and snuggle up on the couch with these Christmas favorites.

1. Christmas With the Kranks (2004). If you’re a fan of comedy, Tim Allen, and movies that remind you of what the Christmas season is all about, you’re probably going to love Christmas With the Kranks. This movie follows the story of a middle-aged couple that tries to “skip” Christmas by going on a tropical getaway after their daughter can’t come home for the holidays. But, when their daughter’s plans change, the Kranks have to find a way to ensure that their little girl comes home to a proper American Christmas. Full of love, laughter, and Christmas miracles, Christmas With the Kranks is a must-watch this holiday season.

2. Eloise At Christmastime (2003). Were you a fan of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody (2005-2008) growing up? I sure was! The idea of living in a hotel sounded like the coolest thing to me when I was a kid. That’s why I initially took a liking to the movie Eloise At Christmastime. This Christmas movie tells the story of a young girl living in a hotel with her grandma and having the holiday adventures of a lifetime, even though her mother fails to join them to spend the holidays together. This plot is intertwined with the romance of a waiter at this hotel, who happens to fall in love with the daughter of the wealthy hotel owner. And, just when you thought things couldn’t get more interesting, we learn of a suspicious presence in the hotel — a man whose intentions are eventually uncovered by Eloise herself. Are you in the mood for a movie filled with mystery, romance, comedy, and family? Give Eloise At Christmastime a go!

3. Daddy’s Home 2 (2017). You might want to watch the non-festive prequel to this Christmas comedy first, but this movie on its own is still to-die-for! Amazing actors like Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, and Mel Gibson come together in this festive comedy movie about a dad and a stepdad whose holiday plans get thwarted when their own fathers pay them a surprise visit. Will this hilarious family survive the holidays with twice as many dads as planned? Watch Daddy’s Home 2 to find out! If you’re looking for a Christmas movie that has a more contemporary comedic feel to it, this is the movie for you. Classics are always great, but sometimes, newer movies take the cake.

4. A Bad Moms Christmas (2017). Another contemporary comedy, A Bad Moms Christmas follows the story of three unappreciated moms who have to balance their children, their relationships, work, and of course — Christmas preparations. Even if you’re not a mom, you’re bound to encounter so many relatable moments in this movie. If you’re looking for a Christmas comedy that’s not the typical family-friendly G-rated classic, then A Bad Moms Christmas might be exactly what you’re looking for. The prequel to this movie is non-festive, but if you’re ready to binge-watch some quality comedies, perhaps you’d better start with Bad Moms (2016) before getting to this one!

5. Love Actually (2003). I know, I know — I promised you movies that are lowkey and unheard of. Love Actually doesn’t quite make that cut, but I couldn’t just forget to remind you to watch this Christmas classic! I’ve been watching it with my mom since I was little, I make my husband watch it with me now every Christmas, and I’m going to keep watching it every year until I learn the whole script by heart. This holiday movie that follows several interwoven storylines has been critiqued for being “unrealistic,” but, I mean — it’s a movie. It’s not supposed to resemble your day-to-day life, and let me tell you — it sure doesn’t! This movie is sweet, funny, emotional, nerve-wracking, and nothing short of exciting. So, no matter who you are or where you’re going to be this holiday season, be sure to watch Love Actually.

Do you have a favorite Christmas or holiday movie? Be sure to share it in the comments! I know I’m always on the lookout for new festive films to check out, and I’m sure other readers are as well. And remember to have a safe and festive holiday season!
