By Chenise Johnson on June 15, 2015

Knowing you are about to move to a completely different state cannot only be very overwhelming with the logistics of everything, but you will have mixed emotions of fear and excitement! Whether you are moving just a state over or moving across the country, leaving the life you know and probably have known for many years is something completely different and definitely a huge step. The following contain some important advice that will help you on your upcoming move.

Cost of Living

Every state’s cost of living will be different from the next. Before your move, make it your mission to research the cost of housing, living items, and services in your new state and compare it to the state you currently live in. It is also important to determine whether or not your salary will be enough to cover all living expenses.

A great tool many recommend using to do this is simply the internet. There are numerous amounts of websites that allow you to enter your current earnings and where you presently live and compares it to your new place of living including your new city and state. Simple things such as gas prices should also be a factor when moving out-of-state. Remember that it is vital to be most prepared in situations like these because being prepared will allow you to experience a smooth transition into your new state.

Packing

I honestly believe that most people would agree with me when I say that packing has to be one of the most challenging things about moving especially moving to a new state! I have flashbacked to when I moved to college and I was in-state, I can only imagine that moving out-of-state magnifies the situation in packing.

You should start as soon as you have a set moving date to declutter everything you own. The less belongings you have, the easier the move will be. I sometimes tend to hold on to possessions that I do not need and it is important to weed out as many possessions as you can. Now I am not referring to classic baby photographs but you need to part with everything that you do not use or plan not to use in the future. Think of it as completely starting new.

Understand that you do not always have to completely throw your possessions away when getting ready for a huge move to a new state. There are many options such as donating that allow you to still part with your items but know that they will still be in great use to someone. Aside from the usual clothes, donation centers such as Goodwill and The Salvation Army will accept almost anything from CDs and DVDs, kitchen supplies, and anything else someone less fortunate than you or someone who loves to collect used things may potentially want.

Make Friends

After you are settled into your new location, it can be easy to be cooped up in your new home or apartment watching the hours pass you by as you overdose on Netflix television shows and movies but it is important that you make an effort to meet new people who can potentially turn into your new friends. There are always several opportunities to come across new people. An easy place is your area of work.

Get to know your coworkers through lunch and dinner dates or on breaks. If that turns out to be a fail then you need to be bolder than usual. Don’t be afraid to tell others that you are new. Whether it is at a coffee shop or around where you live, steer away from being shy and be forward with making new friends. Also, say “Yes!” When living in a new state, saying yes to any new opportunity that is social puts you in good standing to meet and connect with new people.

Get to Know the City

If able to, try walking around to various locations within your city. Sure you can use your smartphone to search up places to see but you will miss out on the adventure that comes with stumbling upon a place and discovering the city and all of the cool things in it for yourself.

Interacting with real people besides the internet is also a great way to know your new city. These people most likely know the best places to shop, eat, and just have some downtime within the city. When you do want to use social media, checking for responses on Twitter and Facebook can also be a great way to connect with people of the city. As I mentioned before using the plain ole “I just moved here,” or “I am new to the city,” works wonders! Often The United States has the stigma of being not very personable but you will be surprised to know how welcoming people are to newcomers.
